The gift you really need for the holidays is to book your yearly eye exam!

Can you believe it?  In a few short weeks the end of another year is upon us, and if you can’t remember the last time you saw your eye doctor, it is probably time to do something for yourself and book an appointment today!

For people between the ages of 18 and 60, the AOA (American Optometric Association) recommends that you schedule a comprehensive eye exam once every two years.  If you are 61 or older or have a family history of eye disease, diabetes or high blood pressure, make that exam an annual “must do” on your health check list.  Same goes for you if you wear contacts or have had any kind of eye injury or surgery.  When it comes to your eyes, it is better to be safe (and healthy) than sorry.

When booking an exam, make sure that you schedule a comprehensive eye exam not just a vision screening.  Only an eye exam by an optometrist or ophthalmologist can rule out serious eye diseases that can be hard to detect.  So, in addition to checking your current prescription, ask your eye doctor for a glaucoma screening and to check your overall eye health.  Plan to bring a friend as a comprehensive exam will require that your eyes be dilated in order to look inside your eye.  This is how your doctor can look inside the eye at your retina, macula and optic nerve and where there is time for early diagnosis of eye diseases like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration.

Your vision is a gift you get to use every day.  Protect it with regularly scheduled eye exams, a good diet, and if you have that smoking habit, it is a good time of year to consider quitting once and for all.  Your eyes will thank you and you will improve your chances of maintaining life-long sight!  Make December the month to remember and book your eye exam today!
